Election notification issued, Poll on 12th in Sikkim and 17th April in Darjeeling

PR, PBI, KalimNews, 5 March, 2014: Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath said, officially announcing the schedule for the Lok Sabha elections 2014, that the Election Commission is mandated to complete the election process latest by May 31. Sampath said that the model code of conduct will be enforced with immediate effect soon as the schedule is announced.
The 2014 general elections will be held in 9 phases from April 7 to May 12, which makes a total of 9 days across 543 constituencies. The counting for all the constituences shall be done and completed on May 16. This time 814 million people, 10 crore more than 2009 general elections, will be voting across 9.30 lakh polling stations.Special features of the 2014 General elections include photo electoral rolls which will be issued to each and every voter. EPIC distribution which was 82% last year, has reached 96%. The TIR team presents a state-wise schedule of the Lok Sabha elections.
The five year term of the 15th Lok Sabha is due to expire on 31st May, 2014. Credible elections, conducted at regular prescribed intervals, are the very soul of any democratic system. Article 324 of the Constitution of India bestows the relevant powers, duties and functions upon the Election Commission of India while Section 14 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 provides for conduct of the elections to constitute a new Lok Sabha before the expiry of its current term.
Taking into account these Constitutional and legal provisions, the Election Commission of India has made comprehensive preparations for conduct of elections to the 16th Lok Sabha in a free, fair and peaceful manner.
Consequent on the announcement of the Schedule for the General Elections through this Press Note, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for the Guidance of Political Parties and Candidates comes into operation with immediate effect from today itself in the entire country. This will be applicable to all Political Parties and to the Union and State Governments and UT Administrations.
As per the revised ceilings, the maximum limit of election expenses for a Lok Sabha Constituency is Rs.70.00 lakh per candidate for all States except Arunachal Pradesh, Goa and Sikkim. For these three States it is Rs.54.00 lakh per 17 candidate. For the Union Territories, the maximum limit is Rs.70 lakh per candidate for NCT of Delhi and Rs.54.00 lakh per candidate for other UTs. The Commission, after taking into account all relevant factors, has finalized the Schedule for General Elections to be held on 9 Poll days to constitute the 16th Lok Sabha.
The Highlights of the Schedules are indicated below:

Counting will take place on 16.05.2014 (Friday) and is expected to be completed on the same day.
