Siliguri wakes up to coldest morn

SNS, Siliguri, 26 December 2013:With a thick blanket of fog enveloping Siliguri on Thursday, the town and its rural outskirts woke up to the coldest morning of this winter. As the day remained mostly foggy and cloudy, the winter collections of many came out in entirety.
According to the North Bengal University Weather Service Station convener, Mr Subir Sarkar, Thursday was the coldest day of the season.
“Today was the coldest day of the season so far. The maximum and minimum temperatures were 21 and 9 degrees Celsius respectively,” said the NBUWSS convener.
Mr Sarkar predicted that severely cold conditions would sweep in from the north leading to snow flurries in the Hills during the next few weeks.
“An exceptionally prolonged period of widespread cold is highly likely to develop throughout this winter and last into next spring. Into the beginning of next week there are some colder conditions spreading down from the Hills. It’s going to be slightly chillier than normal, at the beginning of New Year. Quite a bit of the Hills will see rain and maximum temperatures will be near normal for the day time during the next few days in the plains, between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius but it will feel a little bit colder in the wind,” he said.
