Dooars GJM leader Ashok Lama released after 100 days
Pradip Lama, EOI, Kalchini: Ashok Lama, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leader from the Dooars region, who was arrested during the July-August statehood agitation, has been released after being held in custody for 100 days.
Lama, who is also a GJM central committee member, was arrested on August 13 from his residence in Vatpara tea garden on cases dating back to 2007.
Lama was the first GJM leader to be put behind bars from the Dooars when the statehood movement had just begun in the region.
He had received bailed on four counts, but not on the Sibchu case. The Jalpaiguri CJM court released Lama this morning adjudging him innocent in all cases lodged against him.
A visibly relieved Lama said he was treated as a political prisoner and the jail authorities treated him well.
On being asked about his future plans, the GJM leader said he has none at the moment and wishes to rest at home for a few days before returning to party work.
Happy with the release of their leader, GJM supporters gave Lama a grand welcome on his arrival in Vatpara.
An emotional Julie (Lama’s wife) said she felt as though her husband was returning home after 100 years and not 100 days.
