‘Cornered’ GJMM MLA wants to quit
SNS, Kolkata, 27 November 2013: Mr Harka Bahadur Chettri, Kalimpong MLA, urged Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) to withdraw his MLA candidature after party chief, Mr Bimal Gurung, criticised him for lack of co-ordination with the state government.
Mr Chettri said Mr Gurung sought an explanation from him today after the state government, again, slapped new cases against the seven arrested members of the Gorkha Janmukuti Morcha instead of releasing them.
"Mr Gurung has accused me of not coordinating with the state government regarding the release of the prisoners who were arrested following the GJMM movement," he said.
He came to meet Mr Firhad Hakim, state municipal affairs and urban development minister, at the Writers' Buildings today.
Mr Chettri said he had informed Mr Hakim regarding the prisoner release issue as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was not in the city. Though Mr Hakim claimed that Mr Chettri did not speak to him regarding this matter, but he said the MLA should meet the Home secretary regarding the issue and that he has nothing to do with it.
Mr Chettri said according to the tripartite agreement, the state government should release the arrested members of the Gorkha Janmukuti Morcha who were involved in the movement for formation of a separate state of Gorkhaland. "But the government is now maintaining a double standard policy on the issue of prisoners' release," he said.
"I am always good coordinating with the state government but the role of the government is not fair in this matter," he said.
