CID bomb lesson

TT, Siliguri, 19 November 2013: Siliguri, Nov.19: The CID today organised a special co-ordination drive at the Siliguri Metropolitan Police office to update the the members of different law enforcement agencies on equipment used for the detection and disposal of explosives.
The CID headquarters at Bhawani Bhavan in Calcutta organised the programme that was attended by 25 members of the CID, GRP and intelligence branch.
“The initiative aims at keeping the staff members of our department informed about a number of sophisticated equipment of international standard, which we are using for the detection and disposal of different explosives,” a CID officer said.
Apart from Siliguri, the department has its wings in Durgapur, Malda and West Midnapore where similar drives would be conducted.
During the drive, the participants were told about devices like explosive vapour detector (EVD), buster contraband detector (BCD) and portable baggage scanner (PBS).
“Apart from taking help of sniffer dogs, a number of advanced instruments are used to look for improvised explosive devises or a timer bomb. An EVD can help identify the nature of an explosive. A PBS can help scan luggage or containers and BCD is useful in detecting explosives kept inside items like a tyre or a pipe. We are going to organise such programme across the state.”
K. Jayaraman, the commissioner of police, Siliguri Metropolitan Police said: “This is a routine exercise of the department.”
