Jalpaiguri zp the only one in the state where the Left has been able to retain power

SNS, Siliguri, 10 September 2013:The Left Front today formed the Jalpaiguri zilla parishad unopposed.
The Jalpaiguri district is the only one in the state where the Left Front has been able to retain power and would rule the panchayat system in consultation with the district administration.
The Jalpaiguri district Left Front proposed Noorjahan Begam, a CPI-M member, as sabhadhipati and Jusinta Lakra, a RSP member, as saha-sabhadhipati. Both of them were elected unopposed and took oath to run the Jalpaiguri zilla parishad office today.
The CPI-M district secretary, Mr Krishna Banerjee, said the post for the Jalpaiguri sabhadhipati was reserved for woman.
Though the saha-sabhadhipati post was not reserved, we decided to propose the name of a woman from Adivasi community, who belongs to the RSP. Noorjahan Begam is a resident of Gadong-I gram panhayat area in Dhupguri block.
She belongs to a peasant’s family and started her political career from college. She was associated with the Ganatantrik Mahila Samiti and became member of its state council. Jusinta Lakra, belonged to the tea worker’s family in upper Nagrakata area, and got involved in politics following inspiration from her in-law's house.
