HRPA Darjeeling objects to human rights commission chairman’s statement

Prashant ACharya, EOIC, Siliguri, 12 Sep 2013:The Human Rights Protection Association has raised objections to a statement made on Wednesday by the West Bengal Human Rights Commission chairman at a public hearing in Siliguri.
In a letter to the chairman, HRPA Darjeeling district general secretary Lochan Gurung said, “Holding such a prestigious position as that of the Human Rights Commission chairman, he cannot make statements that hurt the sentiments of the hill people.”
He further alleged the chairman was not at all interested to hear out cases from Darjeeling for reasons he knows best.
According to Gurung, Darjeeling HRPA members met HRC chairman Ashok Kumar Ganguly and highlighted the issues of human rights violation in the hills, but he brushed them aside saying the Commission has no jurisdiction to handle such matters and they should be placed before the high court to get proper justice.
The letter by HRPA Darjeeling addressed to the Human Rights Commission chairman was received by Rabindranath Samanta, retired high court judge and a member of the State Human Rights Commission.

KalimNews: Rev Dr E.D.Pradhan President of Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh also has criticised the statement in his social network. He has said "Shocked and it is very unfortunate that the Chairman of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission Mr Justice Mr Ashok Kumar Ganguly made a very political statement and echoed the political bengali view point that division of state not good for Hill people. Some weeks earlier state Governor made similar statement that from occean to mountain Bengal is one. Surprising that constitutional head and the one who is appointed to protect violation of human rights are echoing the views of political bengalees. We urge scholar bengalees to rise above the party line and condemn such communal approach to the issues of Gorkhas in this country. How can we trust bengal human rights commission whose chairman has such prejudice view point against us. We condemn political statement made by the chairman, bengal human rights Commission."
