Darjeeling cops hold debate on human rights violations by police
Prashant Acharya, EOIC, 22 Sep 2013:The Darjeeling Police today organised a debate on the topic ‘Are human rights violations a reflection of the inefficiency of the police?’
Participants comprised police officers from various divisions of Darjeeling District, including the RAF, while Human Rights Protection Association members had been invited as guests.
HRPA executive member (legal cell) Sangamitra Bomzon was among the jury that comprised Dhurba Kumar Tamang (retired DSP), Sudeep Sarkar, IPS, ASP, and Binod Agarwal, Police Prosecutor and Special Public Prosecutor for West Bengal and the National Investigation Agency.
The debate helped in understanding the core issue of how and why human rights often get inadvertently violated during 'law and order' enforcement exercises conducted by the police.
HRPA Darjeeling convinced the authorities to hold a joint seminar with the Darjeeling Police on raising awareness on human rights and the public meet is scheduled to take place before Dusherra.
Today’s initiative of the Darjeeling Police has been highly commended and appreciated.
HRPA convener and media secretary Purnakala Thapa hoped such initiatives would reduce the incidence of human rights violations.
