Bhutia org lauds measures for Lepchas in Bengal

SNS, Gangtok, 4 September 2013: The National Sikkimese Bhutia Organisation (NASBO) has welcomed the formation of the Lepcha Development Board (LDB) and Lepcha Academy in the state of West Bengal as announced by the chief minister, Miss Mamata Banerjee while addressing a Lepcha assembly in Kalimpong yesterday.
A Press release from the organisation says: “This, we hope, shall go a very long way in the socio-economic-cultural and academic development of the Lepcha community of the state of West Bengal.”
“We also welcome the entire announcement made by the State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Kalimpong yesterday that aims at economic uplift of the Lepcha community of West Bengal State” added the press release.
The NASBO hoped that the formation of the LDB and Lepcha Academy will further boost the age-old communal harmony in the Darjeeling district, particularly amongst the Bhutia-Lepchas and the Nepalese, apart from bringing further uplift of the community in all respects.
“We strongly condemn the ongoing acts of abuses and lambasting against the Lepcha community in social networks such as Facebook, which is detrimental to the larger interests of the society, and we, therefore, request all the stakeholders to maintain communal harmony and peace at all costs,” the release runs.
