I support Gorkhaland agitation: Chamling .. Gurung assures of no blockade in NH31A

SNS, 11 August 2013: Chief Minister Pawan Chamling today assured that the Government and people of Sikkim are always with the neighbours from the Hills and supports the creation of a separate state of Gorkhaland.

He was addressing more than 300 members of the Gorkha Janmukti Vidyarthi Morcha who reached the capital city Gangtok who are on a long foot march from Kalimpong. Chamling said:

"It is the prerogative of the Darjeeling people to demand statehood as per the Indian Constitution. He said that his government has already passed Gorkhaland Resolution in the State Assembly."

“I support Gorkhaland. Brotherhood and mutual respect that is the hallmark of Sikkim-Darjeeling relationship must continue. We extend our best wishes to the people of Darjeeling in this movement for statehood. Darjeeling people have the right to demand statehood as per the Indian Constitution. Sikkim Government has already passed Gorkhaland Resolution in the State Assembly in support of the demand of the Darjeeling people for statehood”, said Mr Chamling in a simple function to welcome the Vidyarthi Morcha members at Samman Bhawan here on Sunday morning.

The members of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha spearheading the separate Gorkhaland agitation also submitted a memorandum to Mr Chamling thanking him for the resolution and continued support. Vidyarthi Morcha leader Mr Deep Thapa, in his address, traced the hardships and discriminations faced by the people of Darjeeling Hills under the West Bengal regime.

Earlier Mr Chamling requested the bandh supporters to keep the national highway outside the purview of the bandh.

Meanwhile, Sikkim continues to feel the heat of the bandh as it entered its ninth day on Sunday.

Sikkim-Darjeeling is must, we are two eyes of the same face. We must not forget to help each-other. Our friendship means a lot for the prevailing agitation
