Home Secy to visit Hills today for situation review

SNS, Kolkata, 5 August 2013: State Home Secretary Basudeb Banerjee will visit Darjeeling tomorrow to take stock of the law and order situation there. Mr Banerjee will be accompanied by senior police officers of the state. He will hold several rounds of high-level meetings with them as well.
IG (law and order) Anuj Sharma had left for Darjeeling on Saturday and is currently handling the situation in Darjeeling.
Today is the third day of the strike.
The state government has already deployed five companies of Central forces, along with Indian Reserve Battalion and state armed forces, in the Hills, anticipating trouble.
Officials at Writers' Buildings had issued a directive to their counterparts to remain on duty, following a series of arson attacks on state-owned property. Mr Banerjee had ordered the district magistrate and police chief in the region to provide security to government employees and step up vigil around state-owned properties and installations. Mr Banerjee is scheduled to return to Kolkata on 8 August.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the state would inquire regarding the malpractices of a section of Gorkhaland personnel (GLP), a voluntary force. Being asked whether the state government will take action against this, she said the state is aware about it and will look into the matter soon.
Darjeeling police had registered many cases against the GLP for illegally occupying government buildings and wearing army fatigues. Residents, too, raised objection against a section of GLP for extortion. A senior official of the state home department said the state government is going to abolish the GLP force.
