KalimNews & PTI Kalimpong, 30 July 2013: A Gorkha Janmukti Morcha supporter and member of GJYM self immolated himself in Kalimpong.
Mangal Singh Rajput (45) self immolated himself at Damber Chowk of Kalimpong this afternoon chanting the words we want Gorkhaland. Police said Mangal poured petrol on himself and rushed to crowded Dambar Chowk before setting himself on fire.
The incident took the people by surprise, who rushed to his rescue and doused the fire. His friends tried to save him and stop the fire but his body was already engulfed with fire. Seriously injured Mangal was immediately rushed to the Subdivisional Hospital Kalimpong where his treatment was started.
More than 70 percent of his body specially in the lower body parts and hands has suffered burn injuries and his condition is serious said a doctor of the SDH Kalimpong. After immediate treatment he is referred to the NBMCH Siliguri.
Mangal was active in politics since the GNLF times.
Following the immolation bid, IRB personnel were posted to control the situation.
The second day of the 72 hours strike disrupted normal life in the Darjeeling hills with all shops, markets, school, colleges, government offices, banks and post offices closed as GJM supporters gathered at Chowkbazar in Darjeeling as also in the two other hill subdivisions of Kurseong and Kalimpong.
Reports said among offices closed were the district magistrate's, Prasar Bharati and Gorkha Territorial Administration, which runs the affairs of the hills.
There was no work at the 16 tea gardens and at the cinchona factory in the hills, the reports said.
GJM supporters, including GJM Nari Morcha supporters, were seen controlling the entrance to Darjeeling town near the railway station.
There was no transport on the roads or on NH 31A, the lifeline of Sikkim which connects it to West Bengal.
Official sources said two more platoons of security forces were en route to the hills, where seven companies of RAF, five companies of Riot Police and two companies of IRB were stationed.

Among the foreign tourists trapped in the hills, one was from Siberia and another from the UK. Domestic tourists have already left the hills.
GJM chief Bimal Gurung had yesterday threatened that the three-day strike would be extended into an indefinite one to press for Gorkhaland in case statehood was conferred on Telengana. He had also announced that he would quit as GTA chief in a day or two.

Yesterday, a youth of Darjeeling also tried to self immolate. 36 yrs old Sanjeev Lama a tour operator by profession and an active GJYM member was immediately stopped by other GJM supporters at Chowk Bazar Darjeeling when he tried to immolate himself after pouring Kerosene oil.
He was rushed to the hospital and later released. In the social network Face book says that " mero tarfa bata ewtai kuro tapai haru sita share garna chahan6u aaba hami pachadi farkeyra hernu hudaina ek palta hami sampurna jaati eksutra ma badhiyera yo Gorhaland ko Nirnayak sangarsha ma lagi paraw,, dekhai dew hami hamro adhyam sahas ko parichay yo Bangal lai,, jasley hami Gorkha lai paitala ko dhulo samjhi6a.Ekpalta sampurna josh ra sakti lagaw ra hamro sapana lai hakikat ma paribartan banaw."
He meant to say that for Gorkhaland let us not turn back but be united and show our courage to the Bengal government which treats us as dust. Let us make our dream come true.
