Expect monsoon rain on June 11
Kolkata might experience monsoon on June 11 when it is likely to hit Gangetic Bengal. Monsoon winds reached the south-western coast of India on Saturday.
The summer this time has been more humid that scorching. Just when the sun was starting to put Kolkata on the boil, a depression area developed in the Bay of Bengal and blanketed the city in four days of beautiful weather.
According to the Alipore Met office, unless there is any further development in the north of Bay of Bengal, the monsoon will hit the state at right time. Last year, a delayed monsoon had played havoc with farming in Bengal.
In fact, if a low pressure zone develops in the north of Bay of Bengal, monsoon can arrive even earlier than scheduled.
A low-pressure draught has originated over Rajasthan and is spreading across Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Gangetic Bengal. This would cause medium to heavy rainfall in North Bengal - Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar may see thunderstorms.
In Kolkata and its adjacent areas, the highest temperature will veer around 33 degrees Celsius but there will be little respite from discomfort because of the high humidity.
