
Chamling writes to Assam counterpart over atrocities on Indian Gorkhas
SNS, GANGTOK, 21 JUNE: The Chief Minister of Sikkim, Mr Pawan Chamling has written a letter to his counterpart in Assam, Mr Tarun Gogoi yesterday, expressing his deep concern over the instances of hardships and difficulties being faced by the members of the Gorkha Community who are bonafide Indian citizens in the Bodoland Territorial Administration areas.
The letter of the Chief Minister is based on the report submitted by the fact-finding committee of the Press Club of Sikkim who had sent their four members to the affected areas and submitted details of the plight of the members of the Gorkha community there.
The team had visited the affected areas from 29 to 31 May and had submitted a detailed report to the Chief Minister of Sikkim.
While appreciating the steps taken by the government of Assam in quickly restoring and maintaining law and order and peace in the affected areas, Mr Chamling said that the hardships and difficulties inflicted and suffered by the members of the Gorkha community who are bonafide Indian citizens needs to be addressed.
Mr Chamling requested Mr Gogoi to look into the matter sympathetically and taking initiatives to mitigate and redress their grievances in order to restore feeling of security.
A copy of the resolution passed by the Press Club of Sikkim of 23 May along with a detailed fact-finding committee report and a copy of the letter addressed to the Union Home Minister was forwarded along with the letter.
