Deep Gazmer, TNN | May 16, 2013, DARJEELING: Softening her stance on GJM again on Wednesday, chief minister MamataBanerjee referred to Darjeeling as "the heart of Bengal" and went on to greet the crowd in Nepali .
Soon as the CM uttered "Timi haru kasto chau (Hope you are doing fine)", those gathered outside the Gorkha Ranga Manch Bhawan broke into a delightful applause.
However, she made it clear that there will be no division of Bengal. Speaking at a public function in the Hills on Wednesday, Mamata said: "Prakriti (nature) has no boundary and the sky cannot be demarcated."
This apart, Mamata laid the foundation for eight projects, to be undertaken in the Hills, from the newly-built Gorkha Ranga Manch Auditorium. She inaugurated the newly-made main auditorium of the Ranga Manch and a fair price medicine shop at the Darjeeling district hospital.
"I want to see the people of the Hills happy and smiling. Health is important and I want that even the poorest of people have access to quality medicines at affordable price," said the CM as she laid the foundation stones for the district reserve store to be built at Darjeeling's Eden hospital at a cost of Rs1.96 crore and the nine-hole golf course at Sinchel in Jorebungalow.
It may be recalled that the chief minister on Monday had expressed satisfaction over the meeting with GJM president Bimal Gurung on Tuesday evening and stressed on the need to work together. "If we (GJM and GTA) are together, then we can do good work. There was a conspiracy from vested elements to destabilize the state's relation with the Hills but that has failed," said Mamata.
Blaming the erstwhile Left Front government, Mamata said: "Those who ruled Bengal for over thirty years have failed in their gameplan to create a gap between the state government and Hills."
Terming the GTA a 'gift' from the state and Centre, Gurung said: "There was some miscommunication with the state government which has now been cleared. In fact, we regret the chain of events and assure that the January 29 like incident will not be repeated in future."
He seemed all the more upbeat as the state government has already sanctioned Rs103 crores for various development works and Rs 2000 crore for 300MW hydel projects. Mamata also seemed keen to put an end to the drinking water crisis. She said a Rs 304 crore project would be started at Kalimpong, while the one at Darjeeling is pegged at Rs155 crore.
The chief minister has asked the GTA to submit a proposal to develop the chaotic traffic system in the Hills. But when asked about the central university in the Hills that is incorporated in the GTA agreement, Mamata said that it was a central subject.
"There are issues that only a state or a central government or the GTA can do. The central university issue is related to the central government, but we will fervently pursue the matter," she assured.
The Bengal chief minister, however, did not touch upon issues such as withdrawal of political cases against GJM leaders and supporters and waiver of taxes and pending electricity and telephone bills among the many demands placed in the memorandum that was submitted to her on Tuesday
In her second outing to Darjeeling, this year, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today inaugurated and also laid the foundation stones for eight projects to be under taken in the Hills, as part of the peace keeping process.
