Central Minister for Tribal Affairs visits Mirik

Darjeelingtimes.com and agencies, Darjeeling, April 28, 2013: Ranee Narah, Minister of State for Tribal Affairs during her short visit was at the festival of Khambu Rai in Mirik today. She attended the festival of ‘Ubhauli’ organized by Kirat Khambu (Rai) Sanskritik Sansthan (KKRS).
Huge gatherings of the Khambu Rai people participated in the festival from all parts of Darjeeling hills and Sikkim. Culture of Khambu Rai were displayed in various forms of Khambu songs and traditional Khambu dances (Sili).
During the occasion Ranee Narah also took part in the traditional dance of Khambu Rai for some time. 
While addressing the Rai people she expressed that Khambu Rai is genuinely Tribal and assured for the Tribal status of Government of India. 
It is reminded that Khambu Rai people have been demanding the status of Scheduled Tribe under government of India. ‘If Khambu Rai is included in Scheduled Tribe, the Tribal population of Darjeeling hills would be about 66 percent, therefore, it would be easier to separate from Bengal’, said one of the members of KKRS.
