Panchayat election dates
SNS, Kolkata, 5 MARCH 2013: The state government has again written to the State Election Commission (SEC) suggesting the dates of 24 and 27 April for holding of Panchayat elections in the state.
Chief minister, Miss Mamata Banerjee has refused to budge from her stance of holding elections in Congress-dominated districts in North Bengal in the first phase of the polls. Panchayat and rural development secretary Saurav Das had sent the letter yesterday.
Though the chief minister also does not want central paramilitary forces to be deployed during the rural polls, according to officials only 40,000 state forces would be available for covering nearly 50,000 polling booths and hence it may be necessary to get forces from outside the state.
