Kalimpong Police Launch 'NH10 Status' App to Deliver Real-Time Highway Updates and Enhance Monsoon Travel Safety

KalimNews, July 7, 2026, Kalimpong: In a significant initiative aimed at improving road safety and ensuring smoother travel during the monsoon season, the Kalimpong District Police have officially launched the NH10 Status mobile application, a digital platform that provides commuters with real-time information on road conditions along National Highway 10 (NH10).

The application was formally inaugurated on July 6, 2026, by Kalimpong MLA Bharat Chhetri at the Kalimpong Town Hall during the celebration of the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. The programme was attended by Kalimpong District Magistrate Kuhuk Bhushan, Superintendent of Police Aparajita Rai, senior police officers, public representatives, and other dignitaries.

Developed by Apptech, Kalimpong, the NH10 Status App has been designed to provide reliable, real-time updates on traffic movement and road conditions, helping commuters make informed travel decisions before beginning their journey.

At present, the application covers the stretch of NH10 from Rangpo Atal Bridge to Seti Jhora, enabling users to instantly check whether the highway is open or affected by landslides, rockfalls, traffic congestion, road blockades, accidents, single-lane traffic movement, diversions, or other disruptions. The platform also provides information on the cause of any road closure or traffic restriction, along with the approximate time required for clearance whenever such information is available.

Speaking after the launch, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Bishal Sarkar said the application had been developed primarily to address the lack of reliable information available to commuters, particularly during the monsoon when landslides and road blockages frequently disrupt travel along NH10. He explained that the platform would deliver continuous, real-time updates directly to users' mobile phones, enabling residents, tourists, commercial vehicle operators, and emergency services to plan their journeys more safely and efficiently.

Superintendent of Police Aparajita Rai noted that the initiative was introduced to reduce the inconvenience regularly faced by commuters travelling on NH10. By providing verified and timely information, travellers can decide the most appropriate time to travel and avoid unnecessary delays caused by unexpected road closures or traffic congestion.

The application is currently available for download through the Google Play Store. Commuters can also access the live road status through the web version of the platform at https://nh10status.web.app/map, making the service available even to those who do not install the mobile application.

Police personnel stationed along NH10, together with officers from Riang Police Station and the Melli and Rongpo police outposts, will continuously monitor road conditions and upload verified information to ensure that users receive accurate and up-to-date traffic reports.

Officials stated that the present version focuses on the Kalimpong jurisdiction, but there are plans to coordinate with authorities in Sikkim and neighbouring districts to expand real-time monitoring across the entire NH10 corridor if the initiative receives encouraging public response.

National Highway 10 is the primary road link connecting Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, with Siliguri in West Bengal. Spanning approximately 174 kilometres, including around 79 kilometres in West Bengal and 95 kilometres in Sikkim, the highway serves as the lifeline of the Himalayan state. However, it remains highly vulnerable to landslides, rockfalls, and weather-related disruptions during the monsoon season, making timely information crucial for thousands of daily commuters.

The initiative has received widespread appreciation from frequent travellers, transport operators, and tourism stakeholders, who believe that access to real-time highway information will significantly enhance commuter safety and improve travel planning.

In addition to providing live traffic updates, the NH10 Status platform also functions as a road monitoring and incident reporting system. According to its privacy policy, the application may collect GPS location, incident details, traffic information, uploaded photographs, report histories, and operational logs solely for road safety monitoring, traffic management, public awareness, incident verification, and coordination by authorised personnel.

The application does not sell or trade users' personal information. Data is shared only for public road condition updates, with authorised officials, or where required under applicable law. Images uploaded by users are stored securely for verification and public information purposes, while reasonable technical and organisational safeguards have been implemented to protect user data. The platform also utilises trusted third-party services, including Firebase Firestore, Firebase Storage, and Google Maps, in accordance with their respective privacy policies.

Authorities have urged users to provide only accurate information, upload photographs relevant to road incidents, and use the platform responsibly for genuine road monitoring and reporting.

With monsoon-related disruptions becoming increasingly common across the Himalayan region, the NH10 Status App is expected to become an invaluable digital companion for residents, tourists, transport operators, and emergency responders by providing timely, verified, and dependable highway information.

Carrying the tagline "Smooth. Safar. Shuru.", the initiative marks another important step towards leveraging technology to improve road safety and ensure a more informed and convenient travel experience for everyone using NH10.
