Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, termed the Chief Minister’s visit to the residence of I-PAC co-founder Pratik Jain and the party’s Salt Lake office during an ongoing ED raid as “unethical, unconstitutional and a direct obstruction of justice”. He alleged that a sitting Chief Minister had no authority to enter premises under active search by a central investigative agency or to remove documents and electronic devices from such locations.
“The presence of constitutional functionaries at a site where a lawful search is being conducted raises serious concerns. This is a blatant misuse of power and an attempt to derail an investigation,” Adhikari said, demanding strict legal action against those who allegedly interfered with the probe.
In a separate statement and posts on social media platform X, the BJP’s state leadership said Mamata Banerjee’s conduct had raised “disturbing questions” and pointed to a “deeper conspiracy”. The party claimed that the spectacle of a Chief Minister rushing to an investigation site to secure files, hard disks and electronic devices was not an act of transparency but an effort to conceal potentially incriminating evidence.
“If there is nothing to hide in West Bengal, why would the Chief Minister scramble to remove documents from an official investigation site?” the BJP asked, asserting that the ED was acting within the ambit of the law in connection with a fake government job scam and alleged money laundering.
The BJP rejected the Trinamool Congress’s charge of political vendetta and maintained that central agencies were duty-bound to investigate financial crimes, irrespective of political affiliations. The party further alleged that the ruling TMC was attempting to shield those involved in corruption by portraying lawful investigative action as an attack on democracy.
Concluding its statement, the state BJP said that the truth would eventually come out through the investigation and the courts, and expressed confidence that “the people of Bengal are watching everything closely and will respond democratically at the ballot box”. (With inputs from Agencies)
