Assam's Gita Upadhyay Honored with Padma Shri on Republic Day 2025


Nanda Kirat Dewan, KalimNews, January 26, 2025 : On the eve of Republic Day 2025, renowned Assamese author and social worker Smti Gita Upadhyay was conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award. Upadhyay, an acclaimed literary figure, received the honor for her remarkable contributions to literature and Education.

She is from Sonitpur and has written over 20 books on socio-political issues and India's cultural heritage.

A prominent voice in Assamese literature, Gita Upadhyay is the granddaughter of Chabilal Upadhyay, the founder of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and a freedom fighter. In addition to her literary achievements, she is an influential social worker and the founder State President of the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh in Assam, where she has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the region's Gorkha community.


Upadhyay's work as both a writer and a social leader has earned her widespread respect, and her dedication to promoting social welfare and preserving the cultural heritage of Assam has made her a key figure in the state's intellectual and social circles. This prestigious recognition marks a new milestone in her illustrious career, highlighting her outstanding contributions to Indian society.
