Protests Erupt in Kalyani Against BJP MLA Over Solid Waste Management Project
Residents Demand Resignation, Alleging Obstruction of Developmental Work
Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 24, 2024, Kalyani (Nadia) : Tensions flared on Sunday as local residents staged a protest near BJP MLA Ambika Roy’s office in Central Park, Kalyani, accusing him of obstructing the construction of a solid waste management factory in the Kacharipara area. Carrying placards and shouting slogans, the protesters demanded the immediate resignation of the MLA, claiming that his actions were hindering essential developmental work in the region.
The demonstration unfolded in the absence of MLA Ambika Roy, who was not present at his office during the protest. Bibhas Chandra Mandal, a protester and vocal advocate for the project, stated, "The solid waste management factory is crucial for Kalyani. By opposing it, the MLA is stalling much-needed progress. This is our way of showing resistance to such interference."
In response to the allegations, MLA Ambika Roy defended his stance, arguing that the initiative by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) was more about financial gain than public welfare. "If this dumping ground is established, the area will be plagued by an unbearable stench, making it uninhabitable for residents. There is no valid reason to pursue this project here," Roy said.
The protest highlights a broader tussle between residents advocating for infrastructure development and concerns over potential environmental and health impacts raised by opponents. As the standoff continues, it underscores the critical need for balancing development with community well-being.
