BJP defame slur on MLA

TT, Alipurduar: The BJP will send a legal notice to Sourav Chakraborty, the Trinamul MLA of Alipurduar, for remarks allegedly defaming the party.

Mukul Roy, who was here on Friday, said: "The local has made false statements against BJP. He has made serious allegations that our party has brought militants, arms and money from Assam and other north-eastern states to create disturbance during panchayat elections in the region. That is why we have decided to serve a legal notice to him. Such allegations can damage the repute of our party."

Chakraborty, who is also the chairman of Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority (SJDA), had earlier said that BJP is "importing" militants, money and arms from northeast.

"We have specific information that such people have been seen in BJP's camps in some locations of Alipurduar. We have also passed the information to police officials," the MLA had said.

He however, has not furnished any proof before the media or in public so far.

Mukul, who was on a tour in Alipurduar district, visited houses of supporters, party offices and also met some local leaders who have faced attacks allegedly orchestrated by Trinamul. He left for Calcutta by train this evening.

Earlier, the BJP leader alleged party offices have been damaged and many candidates are staying away from their homes. "If there has been massive development in Alipurduar, as Trinamul leaders have claimed, then why our candidates are forced to stay away from their homes. Even female candidates are staying away with their children. We are also facing police atrocities," alleged Roy.

In Alipurduar , Trinamul has won 30 panchayat seats and three panchayat samity seats uncontested. "I am ready to face the legal notice. ," said Chakraborty.
