Students to get career experience

TT, Jalpaiguri, April 24: The Jalpaiguri district administration today organised an inter-school painting competition with an objective of allowing students to spend a day with a person whose profession they would want to pursue.

The students of the top three schools in the competition would be given a chance to spend a day with a person whose profession these students want to pursue. For example, if anybody intends to be a doctor, he/she will get a chance to spend a day with a doctor.
Two months ago, 84 schools from block and subdivisional levels in Jalpaiguri district participated in a similar painting competition. In the contest, top 12 schools were chosen for the district level competition that was held at PWD More today, Sukdeb Nandi, the district project officer of Sarva Siksha Mission in Jalpaiguri, said.
All the 12 teams made paintings on Mission Nirmal Bangla theme - a campaign to promote cleanliness and discourage open defecation - on the walls of the district education department office.
Metelli High School secured the top position, followed by Jalpaiguri Central Girls' High School and Mainaguri Sahidgarh High School.
In total, 13 students from the three schools will get the opportunity for the first-hand feeling of the job.
"I aspire to be a police officer. It would be nice to watch a police officer working. We can learn a lot about his duties and responsibilities," Kumkum, a student of Metelli Girls' High School, said.
Rachna Bhagat, the district magistrate of Jalpaiguri, said: "The idea was conceived to guide students who intend to pursue different professions. We want them to learn how people in such professions work so that the student can have a clear idea of a job's responsibilities, work schedule and other details."
"The students would be taken to the government departments , hospitals or appropriate places where a person of the field concerned works so that they can spend a day with him/her," an official said.
Swapan Samanta, the district inspector of schools (madhyamik) of Jalpaiguri, has appreciated the initiative.
