The third person, a 44-year-old Kalimpong resident now admitted in North Bengal Medical College, tested positive late in the day, according to an official of the state’s health department. Subhajoy Roy and Angshuman Phadikar, TT, 29.03.20, Egra(EastMidnapore) and Calcutta: Bengal reported three more coronavirus cases on Saturday, including two elderly women who had attended a wedding in East Midnapore where a Covid-19 patient was present, taking the number of those who have tested positive in the state so far to 18.

The third person, a 44-year-old Kalimpong resident now admitted in North Bengal Medical College, tested positive late in the day, according to an official of the state’s health department.

Sources said she had returned from Chennai.

The two elderly women — one 56 and the other 76 — had attended the same wedding in Egra, East Midnapore, earlier this month where a 66-year-old Covid-19 patient, a resident of Nayabad on Calcutta’s southeastern fringes, was present too.

The 66-year-old, who tested positive on Wednesday, is now under treatment at a private hospital in southeast Calcutta.

The women who tested positive on Saturday were already in quarantine at Egra Superspeciality Hospital.

“Thirteen people who attended the wedding had been kept in hospital quarantine and their samples were sent for tests. The results of 11 came negative but two tested positive,” said Nitai Mondal, chief medical officer of health, East Midnapore district.
The 56-year-old is the mother of the groom and the 76-year-old is an aunt of the groom’s father.

A health department official in the district said the two women who tested positive on Saturday would be shifted to Calcutta on Sunday.

An official of the private hospital where the 66-year-old Nayabad resident is admitted said his condition had improved slightly on Saturday. “The patient has shown slight signs of improvement. His oxygen demand is lesser than on Friday evening,” the official said. “He is still critical but his vitals are stable. He has not shown any sign of deterioration in the last 24 hours.”

The samples of his wife and daughter — both admitted in a government hospital in south Calcutta — have tested negative. The man whose wedding the patients attended said guests had come over from Delhi, Hyderabad, Gurugram, Agra and Singapore. “I have checked with all of them. None has taken ill or is showing symptoms,” he said over the phone from the quarantine facility where he and his family have been taken
