Bihar duo arrested with 10kg gold

TT, Siliguri: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence arrested two Bihar residents and recovered 10kg gold worth over Rs 3 crore from Goaltuli More in Phansidewa on Saturday night.

The arrested duo are Sourav Jain of Muzaffarpur and Dilip Chourasia of Champaran.

"On the basis of a tip-off, a DRI team waited at Goaltuli More on Saturday and intercepted a Wagon R. They took the car to the DRI office and searched it thoroughly. Ten gold bars, each weighing 1kg, were found hidden in the car," said a source.

"There are marks in the gold bars which indicate that those are made in some other country. The bars were hidden below the front seats," added the source.

Phansidewa is 25km from here.

Tridib Saha, the lawyer representing the DRI, said: "Charges under Customs Act have been brought against the arrested duo. Preliminary investigation revealed that they had collected the gold at Phuentsholing in Bhutan and were taking the consignment to Bihar."

The duo had plans to deliver the gold in Muzaffarpur. Both are suspected to be members of a gold smuggling racket, said a source.
