TMC row over posts

TT, Alipurduar/Jalpaiguri: Differences have cropped up among Trinamul winners in Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri over panchayat posts.

While the dispute is mainly over who will head the zilla parishad in Alipurduar, there are multiple claimants for the top post in Jalpaiguri's panchayats.

In Alipurduar, Trinamul has bagged 17 of 18 seats in the zilla parishad, with the BJP winning in Kumargram. Among the Trinamul winners, Sheela Das Sarkar and Santosh Burman are main contenders for the Sabhadhipati's post.

In Jalpaiguri, the situation is similar but the problem is deeper in the lowest tier of gram panchayats.

And now, 'God's gift to India'
"In most of the panchayats, there are multiple candidates who want to be selected for the pradhan's post. There are some panchayats where we are marginally ahead (by two to three seats) than the Opposition," said a Trinamul leader.

"We have to make the selection and simultaneously ensure that none of our elected members defect. That can help the Opposition secure the board," the leader added.

Also, some Opposition leaders have alleged that a section of Trinamul is trying to get their winning candidates on board to gain control of five panchayats where none has a majority.

"We have reports that Trinamul leaders are building pressure on our candidates to defect," said Debasish Chakraborty, the BJP president of Jalpaiguri.
