TT, Calcutta: A police sub-inspector suffered bullet injury to the left arm when law enforcers intervened to quell a clash between BJP and Trinamul supporters during filing of nominations at Usthi in South 24-Parganas on Monday.

In the same district, the daughter of an Independent candidate was thrashed, pulled by the hair and pinned to the ground near the subdivisional officer's office at Baruipur

The brother of a Trinamul leader was found murdered at Amdanga in North 24-Parganas on Sunday night. Police suspect Sariful Haque, 38, had been killed as a sequel to an intra-Trinamul dispute over a seat for the local panchayat.

Rafique Jamal, the sub-inspector of the Usthi police station, was shot at when suspected Trinamul supporters intercepted BJP candidates who turned up in front of a block development officer's office to file nominations. The police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the warring groups and shots were fired.

Jamal received the bullet injury and was taken to the Diamond Harbour Sub-divisional Hospital, where he underwent a surgery.

"Policemen were deployed in front of the BDO office. Supporters of both the groups turned violent and things took an ugly turn," said an officer of Usthi police station, 40km from here.
