Mamata may not campaign for rural polls

Mamata Banerjee, infiltration, border districts, West Bengal CMSNS | Siliguri | Following the frequent visits made by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to north Bengal of late, people are hoping that she would be here as the ruling Trinamul Congress campaigns for the upcoming rural elections.
However, if official sources close to the party chief are to be believed, Didi will not be campaigning for the polls.
The sources also said that the state election commission may issue a notification for holding the three-tier Panchayat elections in the second week of April, so that new boards can be formed in time after completion of the polls within May 2018.
“The chief minister has strategically expressed views that she would not campaign for the rural polls. Other party leaders will campaign for the polls in the party’s bid to retain power in the three tiers, including the Zilla Parishad. The objective of such a strategy is to build confidence among party workers and showcase the CM as a contender for the post of Prime Minister, who is busy in national level politics to beat the BJP and Narendra Modi,” an official source said.
“If we look back, the Late Jyoti Basu, the former CM of West Bengal, also did not campaign for rural polls elaborately. Miss Banerjee is confident of positive results in the upcoming polls, which will be a mark to take on the BJP in 2019 in Bengal,” the source added.
On the other hand, people belonging to the Muslim community here believe that the constitution of another front under the leadership of Miss Banerjee in the national level will divide the vote bank of the UPA, which may finally help the NDA.
“To beat the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections, all parties in the opposition should come under one umbrella. This only can stop the BJP from winning the Lok Sabha elections for the second time,” Jalil Munshi, a resident of Maynaguri in Jalpaiguri, said.
According to party sources, distribution of government assistance and schemes through the hands of the chief minister is yet to be organized in two districts–Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri in north Bengal. Party leaders expect to do it before notification of the rural polls.
Many people in north Bengal, especially in those districts in the Indo-Bangladesh areas, are influenced by the results in Tripura, and sources said that Miss Banerjee will tentatively leave on a three day trip to New Delhi on 26 March to meet other political leaders.
