AVIJIT SINHA, TT,  Feb 23, 2018, Siliguri: The Bengal tourism department has floated tenders to introduce eco-friendly recreational activities at "Bhorer Alo," the mega tourism hub coming up at Gajoldoba near the Teesta Barrage.

Sources said in the tenders, NGOs had been asked to prepare a comprehensive plan to establish the facilities.

"A number of new infrastructure facilities would be set up under the project, ranging from plush resorts to a hospitality institute. But simultaneously, there has to be some recreational activities for tourists visiting the location and staying there. That is why we have identified some of the potential activities which can be carried out on the site for entertainment and without disturbing the biodiversity," a source said.

The facilities planned include boating in the Teesta and along the Teesta-Mahananda link canal that originates from the barrage and heads towards Fulbari (on the southern end of Siliguri), cycling through the adjoining Saraswatipur tea estate, walking trail in the hub and in its surrounding areas, angling in artificial trench and bird watching at Pakhi Bitan, a bird sanctuary in the area.

Gajoldoba is around 30km from Siliguri.

So far, around three companies have taken land on the site to build resorts. The tourism department is also planning some infrastructure on the site on its own.

"Our department and the state government as a whole are giving impetus to the project as it is the largest tourism plan in the state. All basic infrastructure are ready," said tourism minister Gautam Deb.

That the state is focussing on the site was evident as recently, a delegation of Indian and foreign tour operators were brought to the site and apprised of the project.

The department wants NGOs, which are expert in conducting such activities, to be assigned with the task of preparing a comprehensive plan to run such facilities and explore options to engage local youths.

"All such activities can be conducted throughout the year. These would be added attractions for tourists visiting 'Bhorer Alo' and can increase the footfall of tourists without disturbing the natural ecosystem," said an official.

The department has also planned a road that would connect it with the Bengal Safari Park, located off NH31, and on Siliguri outskirts.
