HC puts off DA hike case

TT, 19 December 2017, Calcutta: Appeals by two Bengal government employees' unions challenging a state administrative tribunal order rejecting demands for a dearness allowance hike came up in Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, but the hearing had to be deferred because of "technical flaws" in the petitions.

Justice Debasish Kargupta judge said the hearings would begin from January 9 on the appeals against the tribunal's ruling that DA was the discretion of the state government. The appeals have also demanded parity in the allowance with central staff.

According to the Congress-backed Confederation of State Government Employees and the Left-aligned State Government Employees' Union, the 8 lakh-odd state employees get 54 per cent less DA than their central counterparts.

"Dearness allowance is a kind of donation and it is the discretion of the state when to increase the rate," the tribunal had ruled this February.

In September, chief minister Mamata Banerjee had announced 15 per cent more DA from January 1, 2018, and promised to bridge the gap with the central allowance.
