After SI's death, Bengal cops to go all out against Gurung

MP, 13 October 2017, Kolkata: Bengal Police have decided to "make any sacrifice and do everything needed to maintain peace in the Hills by foiling Bimal Gurung's blueprint of pushing Darjeeling into a fresh trouble". This comes after a young sub-inspector Amitava Malik was shot dead during an ambush at Silubari near the Bengal-Sikkim border in Darjeeling with bodyguards of UAPA-booked Gurung, who is carrying out anti-national activities with "support of Maoists and North-East insurgency groups".
Clearing the tough stand of the state police against Gurung after stating the death of the SI as a great loss to the department, Anuj Sharma, Additional Director General (Law and Order), said: "Our heart goes out to the family of the braveheart SI who was martyred today (Friday). However, it will not deter us from maintaining peace in the Hills and will not allow any such people with personal interests to create fresh trouble."
Gurung has connection with the Maoists and insurgent groups from the North-East, said Sharma adding that "heavy firearms were being provided to them by the groups. They have prepared a blueprint to disturb peace in the Hills and we have information that all the incidents of violence in the Hills so far have taken place under the leadership of Gurung".
He said: "As you all know there is peace in Darjeeling and Durga Puja too went off peacefully. In such a situation, Gurung and some groups who didn't have any mass base are trying to create fresh trouble so that the peace loving people of the Hills cannot lead their lives in a congenial atmosphere."
"Acting on specific information that Gurung, who is wanted, was at Silubari in Darjeeling district with his bodyguards, the police conducted a raid and faced indiscriminate firing. The police too retaliated. The SI died on spot and two policemen were injured," Sharma said adding that direction was given to attack the police.
"They (Gurung and his associates), however, fled to escape to Sikkim, where he had taken shelter in a hideout before entering Darjeeling," he said adding that he was trying to enter Sikkim again and teams comprising officers of the state police are carrying out the operation for which specific details on the location of the accused cannot be provided.
Search operations were conducted after they fled during which nine AK-47 assault rifles, one 9mm pistols, 1,800 bullets, 20 gelatin sticks, several bombs, around 1,000 detonators, 1 radio man pack, a binocular and materials used to make bombs were recovered.
Binay Tamang, after reaching the Kolkata Airport said: "The accused involved in the incident should be punished. There must be some sort of links with (insurgent) groups as so many heavy firearms were recovered."
