Tamang killing: GJM leaders gave orders on phone, says CBI

TNN  Aug 2, 2017, KOLKATA: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told a court here on Tuesday that prominent Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leaders were not present in Darjeeling when Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League (ABGL) leader Madan Tamang was murdered in broad daylight on May 21, 2010, but they were giving instructions over phone to party workers at the spot from Kalimpong.

CBI claimed that while the "conspiracy was hatched" by GJM president Bimal Gurung, his wife Asha, former member Harka Bahadur Chhetri and Roshan Giri among others, some of the leaders were not present at the spot on May 21. Later, the agency came across call records of some of the leaders which pointed out that they were constantly giving instructions to others present at the spot.

"But that does not absolve them of the charges. In fact, Gurung's bodyguard Dinesh Subba had given a death blow to Tamang," CBI lawyer Arun Kumar Bhagat said in the court of chief metropolitan magistrate Kundan Kumar Kumai. "Even after the incident they kept in touch with each other over phone. Some of them kept a watch on the spot as well as on the developments that followed," Bhagat added.

According to CBI, even before the murder plan was hatched, GJM members continued to disturb ABGL members during their meetings.

On the fateful day, there were around 200 GJM members at the spot armed with khukuris and sticks.
