GJM's rally in Terai foiled by Section 144

MP |  27 July 2017 |  Darjeeling: The Gorkhaland agitation spilled down to the plains with the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha planning a rally in the Terai region from Sukna to Darjeeling More on the occasion of Sahid Diwas (Martyrs' Day).
Section 144 CRPC was clamped by the District Administration in the area. Dagapur, on the fringes of Siliguri town has around 10 education institutes including schools, colleges and technical institutes.
From early in the morning, there was a huge police including Rapid Action Force, Combat Force deployment in the area led by two Assistant Commissioners of Police, Siliguri Metropolitan Police.
Water cannons were brought in. Amidst the charged atmosphere, the educational institutes closed down.
The administration and police announced using the public address system the clamping of Section 144 CRPC in the area thereby prohibiting gatherings and rallies.
Finally, the day passed of peacefully with the agitators deciding not to bring out the scheduled rally.

Hemant Gautam of the GJM stated: "We were all set to take out a rally on the occasion of Sahid Diwas.
However, owing to the Section 144 imposed in the area we did not. We do not want to go into any confrontation with the police."
Sahid Diwas was, however, observed at Sukna, Panighatta along with Upper Bagdogra in the Terai region of the plains; Dooars and in the Darjeeling and Kalimpong Hills. Rallies were taken out in different part of the Hills to mark the day.
Incidentally, pro-Gorkhaland parties commemorate martyr's day on July 27 every year in memory of more than 1,200 people who laid down their lives during the violent Gorkhaland agitation of the 1980s led by Subash Ghising and the GNLF. T
he day in particular is in honour of the 18 who died during a police firing on July 27, 1986, when GNLF supporters had gathered to burn Article 7 of the 1950 Indo-Nepal peace and friendship treaty, in Kalimpong.
The GJM will be launching a Mushti Daan (collecting handful of food grains and vegetables from households) programme.
"On July 30, we will be handing over the collected items to the District Magistrates of Darjeeling and Kalimpong; SDOs and BDOs of the Hills to send to Nabanya- the State Secretariat as a symbolic mark of protest against the government," declared Tilak Chandra Roka, GJM leader.
