30-year-old man arrested for anti-national post on Facebook

MP |  27 July 2017  |  Kolkata: Local people handed over a 30-year-old resident of Srinagar to police at Lake area on Thursday after he allegedly posted an anti-national statement on Facebook.
Sources said that some people in the area found that Arshad Ali Nasir has posted on his Facebook page that Kashmir belongs to a neighbouring country.
Nasir sells shawls in different parts of the city. He was known to many persons in the locality and they were also his friends on the social networking site.
Soon after finding the post, his friends gathered more people from the area and went to his house at Prince Anwar Shah Road where he had been staying as a tenant for the past 10 years.
They asked Nasir to explain the reason for posting such a thing on the social networking site.
But he had failed to give any satisfactory explanation in this connection.
The local people then contacted the Lake police station. Policemen from the police station went to the spot and detained Nasir.
They took him to the police station and interrogated him.
Sources said that Nasir failed to give any satisfactory answer.
Senior officers from the police station contacted the Special Task Force (STF) of the city police.
The STF officers continued interrogating him for long hours. It may be mentioned that the common people are now well aware of such developments after the incident at Basirhat sub-division and its adjoining areas.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had urged people to fight against rumour mongers.
Both the state police and Kolkata Police had circulated messages through social media creating awareness among people about fake news and messages that were often being posted on social networking sites.
A senior police officer said it is the outcome of the Chief Minister's intervention and campaign to check the spread of rumours and false information that local people have come together to catch a man who has posted an anti-national statement.
At the same time, the police had urged people to inform in case they spot any such case.
So the people have informed the police soon after finding such a post on Facebook and at the same time, gathered more people to go to Nasir's house.
The police are now trying to find out whether he has links with any anti-national groups.
