Gurung gives Gorkhaland twist to language protest

Gurung gives Gorkhaland twist to language protestAmitava Banerjee |  MP | 6 Jun 2017 |Darjeeling: With Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee putting a lid on the language issue stating that Bengali is to be taught as an optional language in the Hills, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha president Bimal Gurung, decided to give the ongoing language protest a twist and convert it into a Gorkhaland agitation. He will be announcing the agitation programme for the renewed Gorkhaland struggle from Darjeeling on Wednesday.

The GJM's language protest rally in Darjeeling commenced from the Gorkha Ranga Mancha and culminated in a public meeting at the Chowk Bazar on Tuesday. The police had denied permission for the rally. "The CM should have called us for discussions. Now it is too late we will not meet her," stated D K Pradhan, the Darjeeling Municipality Chairman.

Later, Gurung talking to the press stated that the 45 GJM-elected members of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration will be resigning from the GTA in a phase wise manner soon. Interestingly, the five-year tenure of the present GTA board ends in July this year. The GTA chief stated that he had no problems with the Bengal government conducting as special audit in the GTA. "The state government officials including the secretaries and principal secretary will give the clarifications for the audit. In the past too they had conducted two audits but failed to find any anomalies," added Gurung

The GTA chief stated that confusion still prevailed on the Bengali language issue and that a resolution of exempting the Hills, Terai and Dooars from having to study the Bengali language has to be adopted in the Cabinet.

"We will walk on the Gorkhaland path and will continue our agitation till the goal is reached. I will announce the future programmes from the Ranga Mancha on Wednesday," stated Gurung. A protest rally will commence from Lebong Cart Road and culminate at the Ranga Mancha on Wednesday followed by Gurung's address. In the evening, fire torch rallies will be brought out regularly by the Morcha from Wednesday. "Mamata Banerjee can come to Hills but not as a Chief Minister but as a tourist," retorted Gurung.

"Gurung is misinforming people and creating unrest in the Hills. He wants to drive away tourists and instill fear psychosis before the GTA elections," stated Rajen Mukhia, TMC president, Darjeeling.
