Hill civic bodies to stress on drinking water supply

Amitava Banerjee, MP, 22 May 2017, Darjeeling: After winning the Darjeeling civic election on a "Gorkhaland versus Bengal" plank, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha has awoken to the realisation that it is time to develop the civic amenities of the Hill town. The GJM as part of victory celebration announced that they would work to improve the drinking water situation along with cleanliness of the town.

Over the years, the town has undergone a steady degradation. "We have to ensure that the town is clean. For this, we will set up separate conservancy offices at Lebong and Ghoom areas. The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration will also provide two new pickup vehicles to the Municipality. Garbage has to be picked up twice a day," declared Bimal Gurung, President GJM.

In certain areas, micro drinking water projects will be implemented by the Municipality to ease the perennial drinking water crisis. "The GTA has already provided

Rs 3 crore for a micro drinking water project through which spring water will be treated and distributed in wards 27, 28, 29 in the Happy Valley Tea Estate areas. Another project will be implemented in the Lebong area whereby, water from the Rungdung river will be treated and distributed," stated Gurung. Such micro projects will ease out the load on the Sinchal water reservoirs, the main water supply to the town and surrounding areas. "We will disconnect the illegal lines and check the water mafias," declared Gurung.

The old Super Market along with the Municipality buildings built during the British era will be demolished. "New buildings will come up. We will get the funds from the Union government," stated Gurung.

The GJM President was addressing a victory rally in Darjeeling on Monday.
