Asok's soft stance on releasing funds for the Siliguri municipal corporation by the state govt.

TT, Siliguri, May 4: Mayor Asok Bhattacharya today appreciated the Bengal government and said he is getting some "positive response" from the state on releasing funds for the Siliguri municipal corporation.
Today, Asok said that the state municipal affairs department has sanctioned Rs 31.52 crore for developing different roads across the town. Firhad Hakim, the state minister for municipal affairs and urban development, has also assured him that funds for other schemes would be cleared soon, he claimed.
"After repeated appeals to the chief minister and to the different departments of the state government to release funds to the SMC, this is perhaps the first time I have got some positive response. The state municipal affairs department has approved Rs 32.52 crore that will be spent for construction and development of different roads across the Siliguri civic area," the mayor said.
"We have also received Rs 10 crore under the Fourteenth Finance Commission and expect similar amount from the state finance commission. There are a few more projects like repairing of roads (Rs 7.98 crore), installation of new pipelines for drinking water supply (Rs. 2.50 crore), construction and renovation works for the SMC's guest house (Rs 3 crore) which we had placed before the state. We have information that funds for these projects are in the finance department for final approval," he added.
Such change in Asok's stance, observers said, is because the mayor might have realised that instead of criticising the state, it is a better option to try and persuade the chief minister and her colleagues at the state Cabinet through constant communication.
Asok has received an invitation from Wang Xiliang, the mayor of Kunming in China, to attend a cultural exchange programme. "I will send my consent very shortly," he said.
