Man arrested for creating Facebook profile of his estranged wife and making lewd posts on it

TT, April 23: A Salt Lake resident in his early 40s was arrested today for allegedly creating a Facebook profile by using the name and photographs of his estranged wife and making lewd posts on it.

The man was picked up by sleuths of the cyber crime wing of Calcutta police following a complaint lodged by the woman.

"A preliminary investigation revealed that the man wanted to malign the image of his estranged wife by creating the profile. He also apparently mentioned his wife's phone number on the profile," an officer said.

Two days ago, the police had arrested an IT employee, Sandip Dutta, on the charge of creating two fake Facebook profiles of a colleague with whom he had an affair and posting obscene photographs and lewd remarks on them.

Last week, the police had rounded up a youth from Delhi for allegedly duping his Facebook friend, a 45-year-old woman of Salt Lake, of Rs 9 lakh.

The husband has apparently told the police during interrogation that he had created the fake profile in his wife's name after she filed for divorce.

His alleged act came to light after his wife started getting indecent proposals from strangers.

"The woman lodged the complaint without naming any suspect. She had no idea it was her husband who created the fake profile," an officer of the cyber crime wing said.

During investigation, the police traced the Internet Protocol address, a unique code assigned to each computer and other devices like mobile phones on a network, of the computer that was used to create the profile.

With the help of the IP address, the police tracked down the computer to the man's Salt Lake house and arrested him.

The police seized the hard disk of the computer and two cell phones, which he had used to upload the photographs of his wife and post comments.

The police said the accused married the complainant around five years ago and their relationship turned bitter after two years.

"The woman, a south Calcutta resident, filed a divorce case," an officer said.

"The husband is opposed to the divorce. Since the complainant had left him and started staying with her parents, he decided to take revenge."
