Tanker carrying tar overturns on car, seven of family dies on spotMP | 22 March 2017 | Kolkata: Seven members of a family including three children were killed in a tragic road accident when a tanker carrying road building tar overturned on a car in which the victims were travelling.

The incident took place on National Highway-2 near Rathtala in Burdwan on Wednesday morning. Police said that the accident occurred when the car was trying to overtake the tanker. According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that the driver of the tanker lost control over the vehicle and toppled over the car. Both the vehicles caught fire immediately after the accident. The victims were identified as Rajan Kumar (42), Reshmi Sing (33), Riya (13), Anwesha (8), Aarav Sing (6), Seshnath Sing (60) and Normala Sing (58). Meanwhile, the driver of the tanker
escaped unhurt.

Police said, among the deceased was Rajen Kumar, an RPF inspector who started off from their house at a railway quarter in Howrah with his family members. Among the victims, there were two women and two children. Rajen's father was driving the car at the time of the accident. They were travelling to Dhanbad. One of Kumar's neighbour, S K Das said that they started their journey at around 6.30 am on Wednesday in a Swift Dzire car that they had bought recently. Police suspect that the tanker hit the divider and overturned on the car which was attempting to pass by.

All the family members were crushed to the death. The bodies were also charred as the car had caught fire. The local residents tried to rescue the victims by removing them from the car where they were trapped. But their attempts failed to bring them out as the loaded truck completely crushed the car after crashing onto it. A fire engine doused the flames before the bodies were retrieved, following which, the bodies were taken to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.

Police said that the accident took place at around 9 am on Wednesday morning. All the seven occupants of the Durgapur-bound car were killed in the accident, he said.

The local residents said that two cranes were deployed initially but they could not lift the tanker. Finally, a heavy duty crane was pressed into action and lifted the tanker. Police and fire brigade officials recovered the dead bodies from the mangled car. Local people alleged that rescue operation was delayed as the heavy duty crane had reached the spot late.

Witnesses said, when they reached the spot immediately after the accident, they heard the children screaming for help. But they could hardly do anything to remove them from inside the car.

An irate mob put up a roadblock for about half-an-hour demanding action against the vehicles that run at a high-speed flouting traffic norms. A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot and dispersed the mob. The incident led to huge traffic snarls on the National Highway-2 as vehicles were stranded. Some other Durgapur-bound vehicles were also diverted from one kilometre ahead of the accident spot. The right hand lane was used by Burdwan bound traffic. Traffic movement became normal only after afternoon.
