STTO protests against GTA ... GTA bars volunteer teachers

KalimNews Kalimpong, 19 march 2017: Members of Secondary Temporary Teachers Organisation protested against the resolution of GTA and a letter issued by GTA Sabha Executive Member of Department of Education Roshan Giri to the Heads of the institutions to abide by it. The resolution bars the appointment of these volunteer teachers by the state government.
They also burnt effigy of GTA Sabha Executive Member and GJM Secretary Roshan Giri.
Protesting against the resolution of GTA Sabha held on 14 February 2017 STTO members gathered in Trikon Park of Kalimpong staged a demonstration. They protested against the resolution that states that "any appointments other than by GTA will not be accepted". STTO members stated that West Bengal government is sympathetic to the plight of the volunteer teachers serving in different schools of Darjeeling hills and within GTA. But GTA did not make any positive effort for the regularization of these temporary volunteer teachers. STTO members in their own initiative had contacted the state government and the state government had directed School Service Commission to conduct document verification and it was done by SSC in Siliguri.
Earlier Gorkha Janmukti Morcha had stated that the state government had called volunteer teachers who were close to Trinamul for verification of documents for regularization of their services. Most of these volunteer teachers are working in the secondary and higher secondary section of the Government aided schools for more than 20 years.
STTO teachers were once members of Morcha-affiliated Janmukti Insecure Secondary Teachers' Organisation JISTO. Last year they resigned from JISTO enmasse and constituted STTO. STTO has allegiance to TMC and TMC leaders as well as Government of West Bengal is trying to regularize them.
School Service Commission had called them officially at Siliguri for paper verification, a sort of interview, they claim. SSC has been defunct in the hills since 2003 and there are more than 500 vacancies in the schools within the area of GTA .
Amit Gurung, the president of the STTO, said Roshan Giri and the GTA could do nothing for the teachers. The government is trying to help us and put a system in place, but GTA and GJM is again playing politics with our future. Dinesh Sharma Organising Secretary also protested against the move by GTA to bar them from getting appointment and regularised. This is destructive politics, he said.
