Kalimpong facing acute water shortage

SNS, Kalimpong ,13 February: On one hand, the residents of Kalimpong are in jubilant mood due to the formation of a separate district but on other they want the main problem of Kalimpong town to be solved.
Starting with problems of traffic, congestion and drainage, Kalimpong also faces acute water supply problem. The water problem is slowly gripping Kalimpong town as the daily water supply now is supplied in a gap of 3 days.
"We are happy that Kalimpong is going to be going a district from tomorrow but the main water problem is causing us much trouble," said Anmol Prasad, resident of Kalimpong town after one of the political parties here raised their voice against the water problem. After the party's intervention, the department started to supply water every alternate day but from the past many days, the situation has gone back to the start."
Recently Jana Andolan Party president Dr Harka Bahadur Chhetri who met PHE minister Subroto Mukherjee during the latter's visit to Kalimpong had given minute details verbally about Kalimpong's water problem after which the PHE minister had asked for a written detailed report.
Water in Kalimpong town is supplied by Neura Department which falls under the state government and is distributed by PHE department which falls under the GTA.
The functioning of the two department's management has been a problem, said an observer One of the officials of PHE said the sources have started drying as the water level has started decreasing due to which water supply has not been regular".
