MP, 27 Feb 2017, Kolkata: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Thursday arrested Manash Bhowmick in connection with the Jalpaiguri child trafficking case.
Manash is brother of the prime accused Chandana Chakraborty. He was a state government employee and also used to help his sister get prospective customers to sell newborn babies.
This comes at the time when Trinamool Congress workers staged an agitation when state BJP president Dilip Ghosh went to Jalpaiguri on Thursday.
CID came to know about Manash from his sister. One Kishore Chanda had also lodged a complaint against him with the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) alleging that he had cheated him after assuring help to adopt a child.
After getting certain information about Manash, the investigating officers had been keeping a close watch on him. Later, they came to know that Manash used to pose himself as a social worker in his sister's home for destitute children. He also used to give certificates to couples to declare them fit to adopt a child.
The accused was also found anchoring certain government programmes in the district. It had helped him to show off, making people think that he is close to senior officials in the district. He also used to pose himself as a member of North Bengal People's Development Centre and used to go to houses of couples saying that he had to carry out a study to assess whether it would be suitable to let them adopt a child.
CID officers detained him in the afternoon and he was arrested after a marathon interrogation.
Chanda, who is also a resident of Jalpaiguri, approached him for help to adopt a child. He had allegedly taken money from the couple. But he didn't provide them with any assistance to adopt a child. Thus, Chanda had written to CARA.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress workers shouted slogans against BJP when the party's state present went to the district.
They protested against involvement of BJP Mahial Morcha state secretary, Juhee Chowdhury, in the racket. BJP state president said that CID is probing into the incident and steps would be taken against her if she is proved guilty.
