Trafficked woman's body reaches home

TT,  Malda, Jan. 8: The body of a 23-year-old woman, who was trafficked to Delhi three years ago on the pretext of giving her a job, was brought to her village here today.
Last month, Delhi police and members of an NGO rescued the tribal woman from Mukherjee Nagar area in Delhi where she had been sold off by a trafficker.
The woman died at Rammanohar Lohia Hospital on January 4, around two weeks later.
Alleged trafficker Mariam Singh, a resident of North Dinajpur, and three others have been arrested by the Delhi police.
At the hospital, the girl had deposed before a representative of the Delhi Commission of Women and said that she had to face consistent mental and sexual torture in the past three years.
Sources said Mariam and another trafficker had offered the woman a "lucrative job" in Delhi.
The woman's 60-year-old ailing mother stays at home, along with the deceased's brother and sister. Three of them do odd jobs to sustain the family. The woman's father died around 10 years ago.
"The woman accepted the offer and went to Delhi. Since her departure, the family had not been able to communicate with her. On December 19, the woman was spotted at Mukherjee Nagar. Our representatives and the Delhi police rescued her and admitted her to the hospital," said Sahidul Islam, a representative of NGO Shakti Vahini, which works against human trafficking, in Malda.
Doctors at the Delhi hospital found that the woman had serious injuries in different parts of the body.
Later, Swati Maliwal, the chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, met her.
"In her statement, the woman had said that Mariam had sold her to a couple in Mukherjee Nagar. The couple ran a sex racket there. The woman said in the past three years, she had to face extreme mental and sexual torture. She was kept confined to a room and was not given proper food. When she fell ill, the couple dumped her on a street in the area," a police source said.
Police sources said an investigation was on and they were looking for some others involved in the case.
After the woman's death, the district administration in Malda was informed and district magistrate Sharad Dwivedi sent a team to Delhi to get the body.
Today, the body arrived in Malda.
"My daughter had gone to work in Delhi so that she could help the family. But today, she returned home in a coffin. We want exemplary punishment for all those responsible for her death," the woman's mother, a resident of a village in Malda Sadar subdivision, said today.
Dwivedi said the administration was trying to find out how many other girls or women from the district were working in far-flung places like Delhi.
"We got information about the woman's death and took all necessary steps. Today, her body was handed over to her family. It is an unfortunate incident. The administration is on alert to prevent human trafficking and we will act on any complaint filed with the police or any other agency. We are also trying to find out how many girls or women from the district are staying away," he said.
