BJP Bengal pill warning to Mamata - Vijayvargiya drops President rule hint

TT, Jan. 4: Bengal BJP minder Kailash Vijayvargiya today said Mamata Banerjee would face the consequences outside the state if her party did not mend its ways.
"We may not be as strong as Trinamul in Bengal. But everywhere outside, in this country, we are the strongest political force. If BJP workers outside Bengal take the cue and decide that Didi would not be allowed to enter, would she be able to go anywhere?" Vijayvargiya said a day after his party's Bengal headquaters was attacked by suspected Trinamul activists who were protesting the arrest of MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay.
Vijayvargiya dangled the threat of President's rule, saying: "It is too early to comment on the possibility of President's rule, but imposition of Article 356 is not out of the question, especially if things worsen."
Given the kind of majority Trinamul enjoys - it has 217 MLAs in a House of 294 - imposing President's rule would be easier said than done.
Yesterday, Trinamul supporters had besieged Murali Dhar Sen Lane, where the state BJP headquarters is located, triggering a stone-and-stick battle.
BJP sources in Calcutta said Mamata, in her "eagerness to play a national role and utilise the opportunity presented by demonetisation", had ended up helping the party.
In Delhi, the BJP linked the CBI crackdown on Trinamul MPs Bandyopadhyay and Tapas Paul in the Rose Valley deposit scam to demonetisation, underlining that the move was linked to Narendra Modi's fight against corruption and black money.
Mamata Banerjee linked the arrests to her protest against demonetisation.
But BJP national secretary Shrikant Sharma said the attack on the party's Calcutta office showed Mamata's frustration. "The trio of Mamata Banerjee, Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal are against demonetisation because they want to protect corruption and black money," he said.
Asked about that the timing of the MPs' arrests and that Mamata's aggression against Modi was building her as a big Opposition leader nationally, a BJP leader said: "Let Mamata emerge. She has very little appeal outside Bengal."
In Calcutta, Vijayvargiya criticised the role of Calcutta police commissioner Rajeev Kumar, accusing him on inaction during the attack on the party office. "The commissioner did not take any step against thousands of attackers. This is the same man who destroyed important documents in the Saradha scam. We will find out from the CBI what role Kumar played in that probe," he said.
Later in the day, a BJP team led by state president Dilip Ghosh met Bengal governor Keshari Nath Tripathi and requested him to report the "lawlessness" to the Centre.
Officers in Lalbazar said a suo motu case had been started on yesterday's clash against unknown persons based on the complaint of a sub-inspector of Jorasanko police station who was present at the spot.
"There is just one FIR that has been drawn based on the complaint of SI Pradip Karmali. The case has been started under sections of voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons, mischief and rioting," said Vineet Goyal, additional commissioner-I.
Goyal said the police have received a written complaint from the BJP, but did not divulge details.
Sources in the state home department, however, said the police had lodged two FIRs. The second was based on a complaint by a Trinamul supporter. The police had clubbed the BJP complaint with the suo motu FIR, the sources said.
