Tech student held for trafficking - accused of using Facebook and Twitter to entrap women

Hitesh Burman
Dwaipayan Ghosh | TNN | Updated: Dec 25, 2016, KOLKATA: A final-year mechanical engineering student of Bhopal Engineering College was arrested by the Bidhannagar South police for allegedly using Facebook and Twitter to entrap women from Kolkata and traffic them to Bhopal.

Once there, the accused would confine them in a room. Cops suspect he was part of a trafficking gang, though the accused himself claimed he wanted to marry these women.

The accused  identified as Hitesh Burman (21) was arrested from his hostel mess in Bhopal and a woman from Sukantanagar in Salt Lake was rescued from his clutches after being confined for over a month. Cops said that a few of Burman's friends are also suspected of playing a role in this gang. The cops are also likely to visit Ranchi, the accused's hometown. Police said they have also traced his conversations with another woman who had gone missing from Duttabad area in July and was later rescued from Indore.

The police said Burman had first contacted the Sukantanagar woman, a 24-year-old with a four-year-old child through Facebook in the first week of November. Over the next two weeks, he managed to convince her to come to Bhopal where he would provide her with a top-end job. Accordingly, on November 21, Burman came to Kestopur to escort the woman to Bhopal. Once there, she was beaten up and kept in a room.
Sources said that when the woman couldn't be traced, her husband lodged a missing complaint with Bidhannagar South police station. Though the police were initially in the dark, a sudden call from her, in which she claimed she was being kept chained up, helped cops track her down to Bhopal. "We are bringing the accused to Kolkata on transit remand. In his defence, Burman claimed he wanted to marry the woman, but became angry when he came to know that she was already married. We are interrogating him further," said a senior investigator. Cyber bullying, cyber stalking, defamation and hacking profiles have seen an exponential rise in Salt Lake.
"The problem is that a majority of such crimes are committed since the victims have no knowledge of criminal intention of the person who is at the other end. They do not often realize how much danger they are in. Our interactions with citizens are being increased to try and drive in this point," an officer said.
Realizing the extent of the damage, the cyber cells of Kolkata Police and Bidhannagar Police have decided to visit schools and colleges to educate students about the dangers. "We are planning slide shows to educate the students and save them from getting trapped. So far, we have received a positive response," said a senior IPS officer at Salt Lake.
