Raids on 50 banks after cash recovered from BJP leader

TT, Dec. 7: The Enforcement Directorate today carried out searches at over 50 banks across the country amid suspicion of hawala transactions and money laundering.

"The raid was conducted after we got complaints that several suspicious transactions were being done in some banks following demonetisation," an ED official said.
ED sleuths examined the records at the 50 banks where the maximum amount of cash in old currency had been submitted after November 8.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav today announced a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to Razia Begun, 30, of Aligarh, who committed suicide after she failed to exchange the old notes she had. He said Razia, a day labourer, had three 500-rupee notes which she wanted to exchange in a bank. "She attempted thrice in three days but failed to get her notes exchanged," Akhilesh said.
