Keywords to help Class X score

Somdatta Basu,TNN | Nov 28, 2015,  KOLKATA: Keywords in the answer scripts will make a difference to marks scored in Madhyamik examination from 2017. A model marking system is in the making, following which candidates will be marked on the basis of certain keywords and points in the answers. This method is already followed in ICSE and CBSE examinations.

"The model marking system will indicate to an evaluator what a typical answer is and what an examiner should look for in the answer scripts. It will also mention the points which are mandatory and need to be present in an answer. That apart, it will contain the step markings for each step of a mathematical problem. Even if a student fails to give the correct answer for each step he will be awarded marks. Similar step marking will be introduced for other subjects as well," said a source in the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education.

The spellings, structuring of sentences, grammar, punctuations and essence of the topic expressed will be considered before awarding marks in essay-type answers, which carry the maximum marks.

"The centralized marking system in ICSE is done in a different manner. The examiners are present in a particular centre from 8am to 3pm and they are allotted answer scripts. Depending on the subject each day , they are allotted a selected number of answer scripts from the examination centre coordinators. Accordingly the evaluators correct the scripts and register the marks. Then they leave the centre. This continues over a brief period. From 2016 onwards, ICSE will introduce online marking, named LICR (Live In Character Recognition). Such a centralized marking system is applicable in each subject," said Nabarun De, principal of Modern Public School.

He added, "We have been reaping the benefits of the system for a long time. The candidates are not unnecessarily victimized and the examiners have a well-structured layout of the marking pattern."

The reason why the school education department wants to introduce a model marking system is to cut out the subjective interpretation of answers by examiners, which is often inconsistent.

The syllabus revamp committee is working on the possibility of reducing the subjective part of marking. If a question carries less weightage and mentions that the answer should be written within a specific number of words or sentences, then the model marking system will specify keywords, approach towards the subject, mandatory sentences and points, which an examiner can look for in an answer," said a senior state education official.

The new model marking system will be brought in place to ensure that candidates read text books and apply knowledge. Conceptual learning will be encouraged and conceptual answers will fetch higher marks.

Students will be acquainted with the format of all India examinations and other competitive exams. It will help examiners access the candidates better. "For example, if a question in Physics asks students: A force is applied on a non-rigid body and a rigid body . How does the effect of force differ in the above two cases? The question may carry two marks. The model marking system will specify that full marks can only be rewarded if a candidate writes about the effect of force on both the rigid and non-rigid body and then explains their difference. Students who do not comply will be given only one-and-a-half marks," explained the Madhyamik Board member.

There is also a possibility of the board following in the footsteps of CISCE and asking the examiners to correct answer scripts at an evaluation centre. "It will reduce the risk of losing answer scripts. It will also ensure a uniformity in the marks," the board official said
