Morcha oils street levers for GTA - Sunday protests kick off a day after Mamata visit
RAJEEV RAVIDAS, TT, Kalimpong, Feb. 12: The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha took to the streets for a separate state for the first time today since the signing of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration agreement and a day after Mamata Banerjee’s visit to the hills.
The move, party leaders admitted, was part of a two-pronged strategy to force the government for an early implementation of the pact and to counter rivals who have been trying to use the delay to drum up support in their favour.
Rallies and public meetings were held across the hills by the frontal organisations of the Morcha, whose supporters shouted slogans for Gorkhaland.
The processions culminated in public meetings, where speakers spoke in favour of statehood. Although planned earlier, the rallies come a day after chief minister Mamata Banerjee blamed the Centre for the delay in implementing the GTA and promised the Morcha that she would discuss the matter with the Prime Minister.
Asked why the rallies were still being held despite the chief minister’s assurance, Morcha general secretary Roshan Giri said: “The programmes announced will continue. We want speedy implementation of the GTA.”
The Morcha will hold similar rallies and public meetings all over the hills every Sunday in the weeks ahead.
Binay Tamang, the Morcha assistant secretary, said the GTA would not be a stumbling block to Gorkhaland and the party would continue to raise the demand for a separate state before and after its formation.
Tamang said a series of programmes would also be held in Mirik from February 24 to March 1 in favour of Gorkhaland.
Although Tamang denied the Mirik programme was an attempt to thwart the GNLF from campaigning for a Sixth Schedule status for the hills, many felt it was otherwise. “The GNLF has said it will hold a public meeting in Mirik on February 26 to drum up support for the Sixth Schedule. The Morcha’s Mirik-centric programmes are an obvious attempt to counter that,” said an observer.
Arjun Rai, a GNLF leader from Mirik, said his party was yet to decide on the public meeting.
“Nothing is firmed up. We are thinking of holding the meeting. I don’t want to react to other parties’ decisions but what is important is that we are in favour of Sixth Schedule. We will do all that is in our means to force the Centre to implement the tripartite pact granting Sixth Schedule status to the hills,” he said.
The Morcha has accused its rivals of trying to use the delay in the formation of GTA to their advantage.
Morcha president Bimal Gurung last week launched a scathing attack on Gorkhaland Task Force, targeting Chhatrey Subba in particular and accusing him of harbouring Maoists.
The ABGL, CPRM, GNLF(C), Bharatiya Gorkha Parisang and the Gorkha Rajya Nirman Morcha are members of the GTF.
“The Morcha obviously believes that the opposing voices are getting vocal by the day because of the delay in the implementation of GTA. They seem to have learnt the lesson from the GNLF, which lost ground partly because of the long delay in the implementation of the Sixth Schedule pact,” said an observer.
Gurung has also accused a section of the media of providing a platform to his opponents so that they can continue with their campaign against his party even though they do not enjoy any public support.
The local channel here has stopped airing news based programmes after Gurung’s allegation.
The Morcha denied that the party had anything to do with the programmes going off air. “The decision to stop telecasting the news is that of the cable operator,” said Tamang. The civil society has taken strong exception to the development.
“The news programmes must be allowed to resume. The local cable operator should not be allowed to feel insecure. This is the demand of the public,” said N.P. Dixit, the president of the Citizens’ Rights Forum, Kalimpong.

Last Irish Missionary and a social activist died
Kalimpong, KalimNews: Sister M. Declan Fahy the last Irish Missionary of Cluny sisters of Kalimpong breathed her last today afternoon in a Siliguri Nursing home, she was ailing for some time.
Sr. Fahy aged about 76 was the founder of Cluny Women's College of Kalimpong in 1998 and had served at St Philomena's School and St Joseph’s Convent Kalimpong for the last 35 years.
She worked specially for the upliftment of women and children and education in Kalimpong.
Her funeral will take place at 11 am of 14 February in Kalimpong. Before the funeral her dead body will be taken in a procession around the Kalimpong town from 9 am for the people to give her homage for her service to the people of Kalimpong.
She was born in Roo, Craughwell, Co. Galway on 24th July 1936 of a very religious Irish couple Mr. Peter Fahy and Mrs. Minnie Fahy. Out of twelve children, this staunch catholic family gave to the church a priest, and a Christian Brother.
She had her education in the Sisters of Mercy, Loughrea, County Galway, Ireland. and graduated from St. Joseph’s College, North Point and Post Graduated Galway, Ireland.
She had her Spiritual training at The Carmelite Fathers, Loughrea, County Galway, The Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny Ireland and the Province of North India and Nepal.
She had authored a series of books for school children.
After her studies she worked for one and a half years in Galway. Her search for truth and destiny began from childhood, and continued and knew instinctively that something Divine had transformed her entire life. She responded to that Divine call and joined the Novitiate at Ferban on 8th September 1954. She made her first Profession on 19th March 1957 at Gallen priory, Ferban Co. Offaly at the age of twenty-one.
In April 1957 she left Dublin air port for India with Sr. Helena Egan on her new and beautiful mission. She received her B.A. degree from St. Joseph’s College North Point Darjeeling in 1961 and in the same year she was sent to St. Joseph’s Convent School Chandanagore, Calcutta.
In 1967 she left India for London to pursue her higher studies.
After completing her studies she came back to Chandanagore and resumed her teaching career. In the first week of April 1971 she was sent to St. Joseph’s Convent Kalimpong to continue teaching which included taking charge of games and sports. In January 1982, she was requested to go to St. Anne’s Convent and St. Philomena’s School. She loved the staff and the students very deeply, they reciprocated and under the wonderful guidance and unfailing love of Sr. Teresa Rai, the then Headmistress of St. Philomena’s, she experienced miracles daily. This beautiful mission continued up to 1997.
Her stepping into the hills of Kalimpong was a blessing in disguise for the people of Kalimpong. Her selfless “yes” was visible when former Provincial Sr. Teresa Rai entrusted the work of founding Cluny Women’s College for the less privileged girls of the locality in 1998. Keeping all her trust and confidence in God, she accepted this challenge boldly. On 8th July 2005, through her genuine initiative and compassion Cluny Community College was established for the less privileged drop out boys and girls of the locality.
She went to Ireland for her home holidays in 2011. From the time Sr. Declan came back she hadn’t been keeping too well. She approached her end rather too quickly on 12th Feb. 2012 at Dr. Chang’s nursing home in Siliguri. Her mortal remains were brought to Kalimpong the same day to Nitya Sahayika Niwas her “home”.
Dad hit by girl teasers dies
TT, Malda, Feb. 12: A 55-year-old farmer, who had been attacked by youths for complaining to police for eve-teasing his daughter four days back, died today while being shifted from a Calcutta nursing home to the district hospital here.
Gopal Adhikary’s family members had got him discharged from the Calcutta hospital as they couldn’t bear the treatment cost. He breathed his last in an ambulance around 5pm in Nadia district on the way to Malda.
Adhikary had been assaulted along with his wife and two brothers by about a dozen youths at his home near Gajole on February 7 night. The attackers took revenge on the family for filing a police complaint against them for harassing Adhikary’s daughter regularly.
The eve-teasers barged into the house at Garadhol, 35km from Malda, and hit Adhikary’s head with an iron rod. They also hit his chest with sharp weapons and didn’t spare his brothers either.
One of the attackers is in police custody.
Prabin Adhikary, Gopal’s son, said the treatment in the private nursing home in Calcutta had produced a bill of Rs 1 lakh. “We had admitted him to a nursing home in Calcutta a day after the attack. We had run up a bill of about Rs 1 lakh and paid the amount. As we couldn’t afford to spend more money on the treatment, we decided to admit my father to the Malda district hospital. The hospital released him after we signed a bond.”
“My father died in an ambulance on the way to Malda. We stopped at the Nadia district hospital in Krishnagar, where doctors pronounced him brought-dead. We will bring his body here tomorrow after the post-mortem,” he added.
Prabin said his sister — the target of the eve-teasers — has been falling unconscious every now and then ever since she heard about her father’s death.
The youths used to send the girl, a first-year under-graduate student of Malda College, lewd text messages and pictures. Her uncles filed the complaint with Gajole police after the teasers had tugged at her hand at a bus stop.
Prabin escaped through the rear door with his younger brother and sister during the attack. The family has been living at a relative’s house near Englishbazar ever since.
The girls’ uncle, Narayan Adhikary, filed another complaint with the police after the attack, naming four youths from the same village. They were Prasanta Biswas, Sukanta Biswas, Chiranjit Biswas and Ramen Biswas. While Prasanta was picked up on Thursday night, the other three are still at large.
The four had been named in the earlier FIR also.
Malda superintendent of police Jayanta Pal said: “We have received information that the girl’s father succumbed to the injuries. We have started a murder case against all the four.”

Toyota & tourism plans in north
TT, Siliguri, Feb. 12: Automobile majors Toyota and Maruti and four tourism entrepreneurs have expressed interest in investing in north Bengal, industries minister Partha Chatterjee said here today.
“Toyota and Maruti have written to us, saying that they would like to set up logistic hubs in north Bengal. We are very glad at their intent. They want to set up spare parts manufacturing and other ancillary units in the region,” Chatterjee said.
Although Chatterjee refused to divulge where the hubs would come up, Maruti Suzuki had announced during the Bengal Leads summit last month that it would invest Rs 80 crore in the project at Siliguri’s Kanchenjungha Integrated Park. The park is a joint venture of the WBIIDC and Shristi Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd.
The minister said four tour operators had expressed their intent to invest in the region. “They want to set up eco-tourism centres in the Darjeeling hills. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee will disclose their names during her visit to Darjeeling on February 28,” Chatterjee said.
“We have taken several steps to utilise the agricultural products of north Bengal and its IT potential. We have identified four-five areas in the hills, where we plan to set up IT hubs. We have chosen the area because of good English communication skills of the youths here,” Chatterjee said.
The minister said the government also wanted to explore the scope of floriculture and medicinal plants in Kalimpong subdivision. “We will also open a jute hub in Cooch Behar,” he said.
At a CII symposium that he attended yesterday, the minister said the government was willing to explore the business potentiality of the region but it needed specific projects for it.
The minister today lashed out at the previous Left Front government for failing to develop the state industrially and neglecting the region. “The previous government got 4,710 projects and was able to execute only 833 of them.”
Earlier in the day, former municipal affairs minister Asok Bhattacharya said the present government was spending huge amounts on festivals instead of developing infrastructure.
“The chief minister is keen on organising Utsavs instead of developing the ailing Himul (Himalayan Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Limited) or the transport corporations,” said Bhattacharya. He was referring to the 10-day north Bengal festival that Mamata Banerjee inaugurated in Siliguri on Friday.
“All I would like to say is that for 34 years they misused the government funds, which we are now trying to utilise through concrete projects,” said Chatterjee.

Question on Registration of ABAVP raised
KalimNews: Rebel ABAVP leaders claim that the registration of ABAVP has lapsed since the formation of the state of Jharkhand. Actually it was registered in Bihar but since the state of Jharkhand was created its renewal is overdue. Addressing a press conference the ousted leaders Raju Bara, John Barla and Sukra Munda said in a unison that the validity of the ABAVP is in question.
They said that the registration number stated in the letter head used by the newly formed committee is false. We are going to the court for this false use of the registration.
Defying the allegation Birsa Tirky the state secretary of ABVP said that if they literate they must go through it and make statements, these are false allegations. (BNA)
