GJM leaders meet Mamata over doctor's arrest in AMRI case
TH, Kolkata: Senior leaders of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha on Monday met Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the arrest of Managing Director of the AMRI hospital Moni Chhetri, a nonagenarian doctor, once considered a luminary in his field.
They said his arrest in connection with the fire at the AMRI hospital had hurt the sentiments of the hill people since they considered him one of their own. Senior GJM leader Harkabahadur Chhetri told journalists after the meeting that he was apprehensive that the incident might spark unrest in the hills as some organisations were planning to take out a procession on this issue.
This was conveyed to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during a meeting that Mr. Harkabahadur Chhetri and another GJM leader Tilok Dewan had. They also met Home Secretary G.D. Gautama.
Mr. Harkabahadur Chhetri said Dr. Moni Chhetri was a revered person in the hills and the State government was requested to handle his case with care and caution, with due respect to his advanced age and his contribution to the field of medicine.
“I urged her to arrange for his bail or fast-track the case,” the GJM leader said Referring to the Chief Minister's statement made before him that Dr. Chhetri was not arrested as a doctor, but as the managing director of the AMRI hospital, the GJM legislator said the Chief Minister said law would take its course but Dr. Chhetri was free to stay in any hospital or nursing home of his choice as per his health requirements.
Last Friday, the police arrested 92-year-old Dr. Chhetri and Dr. Pronab Dasgupta. They were remanded in police custody till February 2.
The arrests of the two eminent doctors on the board of directors of the AMRI Hospitals, Dhakuria, in the devastating hospital fire last month has sparked a strong reaction from the medical community also.
Members of the medical fraternity said a doctor on the board of directors of any hospital was concerned about medical administration and not about no-objection certificates of the Fire department or municipal corporations.
Doctors claimed that the arrested doctors were not involved in the hospital's day-to-day functioning and if they were put behind bars, then the government representatives on the board should also be taken into custody.

ABAVP brings back rebel leader
SNS, SILIGURI,
30 January 2012: In order to teach local rebel leaders a lesson, the Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad (ABAVP) state leadership reinstated another rebel leader of the outfit in the Dooars, Mr Rajesh Lakra, who had resigned a year ago.
ABAVP state president Birsa Tirkey formed a two member ad hoc committee appointing Mr Rajesh Lakra as its secretary. Mr Tirkey was prevented by local rebellion, allegedly under the leadership of Mr John Barla, former regional president, from organising a meeting at Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri yesterday. Mr Tirkey said that he had appointed Mr Babulal Kujur as president and Mr Lakra as secretary of the ad hoc committee for the Dooars. The term of the ad hoc committee is six months and the committee would bring in other members to run organisational activities.
“A few members of the existing committee were inactive when the Mr Barla was terminated. I did not want to form the ad hoc committee but I had to take the decision in consultation with my colleagues to resolve the present crisis in the Dooars,” Mr Tirkey said.
The ABAVP state leadership had terminated Mr Barla and suspended other leaders including, Mr Sukra Munda, who was the chairman of the ABAVP-backed Progressive Tea Workers’ Union (PTWU), on charges of singing a pact with the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM).
They had agreed to form the Gorkha and Adivasi Territorial Administration (GATA) and offered additional lands from the Terai and the Dooars to the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) allegedly without prior approval of the state leadership.
Mr Barla lodged a complaint with the party’s central leadership against the state president’s unilateral decision to form ad hoc committee without dissolving the existing committee.

Relatives of murder victim demand compensationSNS, DARJEELING,  30 January 2012: Relatives of the murdered employee of Hotel Meghma alleged that waiter Mohammad Mustaffa had been victimised as he had refused to hand over the keys of the bank to the convict.
Assistant manager Sandip Rai was allegedly killed for witnessing the murder. The relatives have demanded compensation from Canara Bank.
Sources said a major reason behind the murder was lack of security on the bank premises. The bank, which is located at Gandhi road, does not have any armed guard or CCTV. They were also nonchalant enough for having left the keys with an outsider.
It is a government rule that every bank has to install a security system. Mustaffa was handed the bank’s back-door keys for using water from the bank as he was also a sweeper at the bank.
The victim's relatives today gheraoed the bank demanding compensation. Branch manager Debashish Dey said the compensation will be paid but before that certain official formalities would have to be completed at the head office in Kolkata. “I have written to the head office and we are waiting for their reply. However, the amount that will be provided to the victim's familiy has not been specified.”
Mr Dey added “We have urged our management to provide security and an arrangment with made soon. It is just two months that the bank has been functioning in Darjeeling and some of the works are still underconstruction.”
The two convicts involved in the murder ~ Shakti Mondol (21) and Sanju Rai (22) ~ are residents of Kawakhali in Siliguri. They were arrested yesterday by the Darjeeling police.
One of the convict had previously worked as a carpenter at the bank and knew that Mustaffa had the keys of the bank. Their plan was to rob the bank and kill Mustaffa and Sandip. However, their mission failed and they had to leave empty-handed as the bank never kept the cash inside the branch.

A wrist device that shocks molesters
HT, New Delhi, January 31, 2012: A school student has come up with a device that may help ward off molesters and also take their pictures. A student of GD Goenka, Rohini, 16-year-old Manu Chopra has come up with this innovative gadget. "The device can be worn like a wrist watch and gives a shock to the
molester, providing the woman has enough time to run or call for help," said Chopra.
The anti-molestation device is activated when it records a significant rise in nerve speed and pulse rate of the victim. It then asks for an activation command and once it comes in contact with the attacker's skin, it delivers a shock of 0.1 ampere, a small potency.
The device also has an inbuilt camera to record the image of the attacker and takes pictures non-stop once activated.
Chopra said that he wanted to "use science to provide safety to women on the street".
Delhi, for the record, witnessed 568 rape cases last year.
According to Chopra, the idea to work on the device came to him when he read about an all-India innovation competition, organised by the National Innovation Foundation (NIF).
The foundation, set up by the government, gives out awards annually to children for their innovation and creativity. This year, they got close to 5,000 entries, out of which 20 were awarded.
Chopra took about six days to make the device.
"The NIF is looking at all aspects of the device now and is working on its viability. Once this is done, it will contact commercial partners to market the product. According to Chopra, the device should cost anything between R200 and Rs 300 in the market.
